Description

This CD brings together Johannes Brahms’s two string sextets, performed by the Belcea Quartet with violist Tabea Zimmermann and cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras. It’s a chamber music recording of two early works composed in 1860 and 1865.

Brahms was among the first composers to write for two violins, two violas and two cellos, helping to shape the string sextet repertoire that followed. He described the second sextet as being in the same joyful vein as the first.

The performers recorded the works after touring major European venues. The first movement of the first sextet opens with a viola motif spelling out “AGADHE” in German musical notation, a reference to Brahms’s failed relationship with Agathe von Siebold.
