Ensemble Diderot - Viola Concertos from Berlin [CD]

Ensemble Diderot explores the viola’s role in Enlightenment Berlin on this chamber music CD. Featuring four world-premiere recordings, it brings rediscovered concertos to listeners interested in the instrument’s solo repertoire.

Performed on period instruments and directed by Johannes Pramsohler, who also plays solo viola, the recording reveals the instrument’s expressive range and virtuoso character. These concertos present the viola as a brilliant, sensitive solo voice rather than simply an accompanying instrument.

Newly composed cadenzas by harpsichordist Philippe Grisvard add to this third volume of Berlin Concertos, bringing fresh perspective to forgotten works from a remarkable chapter of European musical history.
