Description
Charles Mingus’s Mingus Ah-Um is presented on CD in a deluxe digipak with a 20-page booklet and two bonus tracks. It suits listeners exploring Mingus’s jazz and the album’s blend of swing, melody and fluid arrangements.
Recorded in 1959, the album draws on jazz tradition while addressing the concerns of its time, and has continued to feel relevant. The arrangements bring out the nuances of Mingus’s music without losing its melodic character.
“Self-Portrait in Three Colors” is a standout, with fluid arrangements that reveal the detail of Mingus’s music.
